Two 5-year-olds had to be separated when they came to blows on Tuesday. They were arguing about how much in reparations one of them owed the other.
Brown-skinned Diamond claimed Ruby owed a million dollars to her family because Ruby was white and responsible for her Great-great-great-great-grandfather who was alive in the time of slavery. But Ruby claimed she was born 190 years after her grandfather and had nothing to do with his choices. Besides, neither one of them knew whether her grandfather had anything to do with slavery, at all.
That’s when Diamond got mad and started taking Ruby’s toys ‘in the name of social justice.’ Ruby wouldn’t let Diamond take her toys and that’s when the fight started. The parents had to separate the children to keep them from hurting each other.
Later, the parents shared their results from Ancestry.com and and were surprised to find the roles of their ancestors might have been reversed.
Ruby is the descendant of Spanish islanders who were kidnapped by the Barbary pirates in 1640. And Diamond is the descendant of Muslim slave traders in Northern Africa who could have been involved in the slave raids in Europe. Thousands of such raids were undertaken by the Barbary pirates in Iceland, Malta, Spain, Ireland, Italy, and the Netherlands to keep Northern Africa stocked with white slaves.
Both families ended the night laughing. If people are going to pay reparations for slavery, the whole world would owe each other and the payments would never end.
